Installation and Start

GeneStrip Web can be installed and started with just a few clicks on Windows (on Intel 64-bit hardware). However, for using larger databases, a PC with at least 32 GB of RAM is required. This is the case, for example, for the databases Human Parasites and Protozoan Infections.
Otherwise, analysis jobs will fail with an error message.

Downloading and Installing

  1. Download the program from https://genestrip.it.hs-heilbronn.de/files/bin/. The file name is gweb-??-windows-x64.zip, where ?? represents the current version.
  2. Extract the zip file and copy the corresponding gweb folder to your desktop.

Starting and Stopping

To start:

  1. Navigate to the (desktop) folder gweb\bin and double-click on the file GWeb.exe. A command line windows opens with black background. It will be filled with several messages that you can safely ignore.
  2. At first start, an alert from Windows Defender may pop up: If given, please confirm the message by clicking the button Enable access. Finally, the GeneStrip Web interface will open in your default browser.
  3. Click on English in the top right corner to change the language, if not yet set.

To stop and restart:

  1. As mentioned above, after starting, a command-line window with a black background and no user interface elements will appear. As long as this window remains open, GeneStrip Web is running.
  2. Once you close the command-line window, GeneStrip Web will stop, and the web interface in the browser will no longer work, instead showing an error message during interactions.
  3. To restart GeneStrip Web, simply double-click on the GWeb.exe file again as described above.

Installing a Database

To use GeneStrip Web, you need to install one or more databases via the web interface in the browser:

  1. Click on the Databases tab. Several databases are available for installation.
First, select the Human Viruses V2 database from the table as an example, since this database is very small.
  2. Click on the Install... button and then click Ok in the confirmation request. The database will now be downloaded from here and installed on your computer in the gweb\data folder.
Depending on the size of the database and your internet connection, this may take anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes.
  3. Click on the Jobs tab. There, you will see the job for installing the database in progress. Wait until the job is completed.

You can repeat this process for installing additional databases.

Creating and Viewing Database Information

After a database has been installed, you can create and view information about its contents through the web interface:

  1. Click on the Databases tab.
  2. Select an already installed database from the table.
  3. If the View... button is grayed out, click on the Start Job... button. A job will automatically start that generates the database information.
The generation may take anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes, depending on the size of the database.
  4. Once the job is completed, the database information will be available as a CSV file, and the View... button will appear for that database.
  5. Click on the View... button for the selected database in the Databases tab to view the information in GeneStrip Web.
The data will be displayed as a table in a separate browser tab. Alternatively, you may download the corresponding CSV-Datei via the link next to View....
